Official Star Trek “PADD” App For iPad Developed By ArcTouch For CBS

Starfleet Headquarters, San Francisco – Stardate 2011.07.11

Engineers from Starfleet and United Federation of Planets have announced the immediate availability of the Starfleet PADD app for iPad devices.  After 45 years of continuous development and enhancement, most of which took place in a future timeline, the PADD, or Personal Access Display Device, has become a standard piece of equipment for all members of Starfleet. The PADD app is now available for Apple’s iPad.

An app where no app has gone before

“Our team implemented a focused chroniton particle generator using a combination of the iPad’s WiFi, Bluetooth, and ultra-frequeny sounds.  But it wasn’t until we integrated the onboard gyroscope that we were able to establish the temporal wormhole between the 21st and 24th centuries,” said Captain Eric Shapiro, of the 21st century app development studio known as ArcTouch.

“When we saw the wormhole open up we were stunned,” recalled Commander Adam Fingerman, from ArcTouch’s operations center.  “We condensed 20 billion gigaquads of data about aliens, planets, and technology into a databank that would be compatible with the most advanced 21st century devices available.  We then transmitted that back in time to the 21st century.”

The resulting app gives Starfleet personnel and regular civilians direct access to a universe of Star Trek information, including aliens, ships, places, technologies, and episode guide.  The app provides a rich, immersive LCARS interface, and includes recognizable sound signals and voice prompts, making it enjoyable to anyone.  The app also includes the latest terrestrial Star Trek news from Facebook and Twitter.

The app is available today for just under five bars of gold-pressed latinum ($4.99) via subspace radio from the iTunes App Store.

All kidding aside, we’re honored CBS chose us to develop the official Star Trek PADD app. We’re true Star Trek fans and were intensely focused on making this app both useful and fun, while maintaining authenticity and reproducing the LCARS design faithfully. ArcTouch’s app developers handled all the UI and visual design, database development, and app programming and testing.

The app includes the following features:

  • A rich LCARS graphical interface that provides an authentic and immersive experience, complete with STAR TREK-related sound effects and prompts from a recognizable computer voice.

  • An official database of STAR TREK information, including aliens, ships, places, and technologies as depicted in the STAR TREK television series, plus a detailed episode guide.

  • The official STAR TREK Facebook fan page and Twitter feed integrated into the app to let fans catch up on the latest news and connect with other Trekkers.
