Ok, so I know this is a "known issue", but do all apps that use GameKit suffer from this problem? It seems to be very arbitrary whether a successful connection can be made or not between devices.

The receiving device logs that it's being connected from the other device, but eventually times out, or just never times out.

Is there anything that can be done about this?

Thanks,

Hi,

In my view that displays the list of devices, I very often get many duplicates of my devices and even the current device shows up.

I know the "Known Issues" thread says that a device can show up twice, but I've seen it show up as much as 4 times, along with the current device.

Is there a proper workaround for this? It's a guessing game to figure out which device is the available one and which aren't.

Thanks,

Hi,

In my app I have many screens. When a user goes to beam a record from their device to another device, I display the screen which displays the list of devices.

I'd like to not have to make the user of the receiving end navigate to a particular screen to receive the beam however. Are there any negative consequences of initializing and starting the Session Manager in the UIApplication delegate on application startup?

That way when the user is anywhere in the app, they can receive the notification that someone is sending them a record and they can respond accordingly.

I'm worried there will be increased power drain from the battery as the user is using the application if it's constantly in receive mode. Or should I force the receiving user to navigate to a specific page just to receive the beam?

Thanks,

Hi,

I'd like to use the BeamIT code in my app. But I thought I'd first test the BeamIT app itself. I built it in Xcode and installed it on my iPhone 3GS and my 2nd gen iPod touch. But when I run it on both devices, it just sits there saying "Searching for devices running BeamIT!...".

I have iPhone OS 3.1.2 on both devices.

Is there a trick to getting this to work?

Thanks,

I ended up abandoning Bluetooth in the BeamIt framework for my app. File transfers work fine with the BeamIt implementation of the GameKit API over WIFI and I am only allowing my users to transfer using the wifi connection. I do this by not allowing access to the file transfer page in my app unless they have an active wifi connection.

To anybody new reading this post, I have working code for large file transfers over WIFI using BeamIt as a starting point. I have implemented packet transfers, packet acknowledgements and custom UI around this. While I won't share all my code, I will help you where I can if you contact me.

Ok, there is tons of contradictory statements about this in the docs and in the devforums. But the evidence I present is that on my two devices, with the bluetooth turned off in the settings app, the two devices still see each other and still transfer. Digging through the api, I cannot figure out how to get the connection type from a peer or session.

The only thing I can think of now is to give instructions that suggest that both users need to be connected to the same wifi to work. It is curious, however, that if I turn wifi off on both devices, and bluetooth on, that i can never establish a connection through GKSession.

Actually, this is not true. The GK Session also transparently works over wifi due to Apple's behind the scene bonjour work. To test this, turn off the bluetooth on your device and run the app.

What I can't find, however, is a way to distinguish the type of connection established by GKSession so that I can block the Bluetooth ones.

The peer picker is only for the GUI portion of the GKTank, not the underlying GameKit

gchaurais on Packets 'hang' sometimes -- reconnect?

Reducing the size of the packet is a good approach.

Regarding your reconnection problem, what would be really nice is to have the Device class keeping the connection all the time. Although I think you'd need to change a lot of code for that.

But you could have something like:

- (void)connectAndReplyTo:(id)delegate selector:(SEL)connectionStablishedConnection errorSelector:(SEL)connectionNotStablishedConnection keepTheConnection:(BOOL)keepConnection

And the keepConnection parameter would determine whether to reconnect transparently or not. The other objects would never know that a connection had been established.

You mentioned that your last selectors are not getting called. Well, I remember there is a bug with the disconnectFromAllPeers method that takes a little while to really disconnect. So, my suggestion is to add a timer or something like that there to delay the reconnection.

Well, if you're using the GKSession class (the way Beam It! does that), it should work independently from the WiFi hardware. If both have bluetooths on, then you're good to go. If you have just one, it should not find the other one.

For WiFi, you need to implement your own way to encounter other devices, so it's not the same mechanism.
